The Mongolian Poster Cultural Development History

The history of propaganda posters in Mongolia can be traced back to the beginning of first revolution years in 1920’s. Posters of those years tried to expose backwardness of feudal class and arouse the public in the common task of building a new society. Posters of that era were significant in their extreme revolutionary agitation purposes.

The posters of thirties predominantly showed images of rapid industrialisation, progress in health care and advances in cultural and enlightenment activities.

WWII era influenced considerably the themes of the posters of forties era. Major ideas such as protecting motherland from foreign aggression or achieving victory against Japanese militants alongside Soviet Union were predominant.

Poster art took a drastic improvement from sixties when communist party began to use professionally trained artists, who combined western methods with cultural elements.

Posters in general reflected like a mirror stages of historical development of Mongolia, and conveyed various themes relevant to the era it was produced. Cooperation between socialist countries, development of economy and culture, and outstanding achievement such as first flight into space by a Mongolian cosmonaut were subject celebrated through the posters.
